Bro basically distortion occurs due to asymmetrical filling of d orbitals. Due to an extra electron in one of the orbitals, there is more repulsion and bond becomes longer. In most cases t2g orbitals are symmetrically filled, and even if not, the effect of t2g being asymmetrically filled is too less to be acknowledged. That’s why usually distortion occurs along the z axis only. Thing is even I haven’t encountered any questions on this topic so I’m not very well versed either.
